Two "critical" factors stand in the way of any ceasefire deal, a former Middle East negotiator has told Sky News.
Aaron Miller said Benjamin Netanyahu's "top priority" is to hold on to power, while Hamas wants to free Palestinians in Israeli prisons who are suspected of killing Israelis.
He emphasized that the only party in the talks with any sense of urgency is the Biden administration.
" Netayahu's organizational imperative, so to speak, his main directive, is to preserve not only the war cabinet... his main priority is staying in power. He will not accept any deal that threatens the most extremist and right-wing government in the history of the State of Israel. So we have a big limitation there ," he stated.
Miller added that Hamas has also shown it is in no rush and their "asymmetrical" demand for prisoners will be an extremely difficult issue.
"Especially if the reports are true that Hamas has submitted a proposal selecting 500 of the 1,500 prisoners they supposedly want ," he added.
"Significant" gaps remain to be closed, but there is a "reasonable chance" a deal will be reached.
