German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called for the creation of humanitarian corridors ahead of an anticipated Israeli ground offensive on the Gaza border town of Rafah.
Speaking a day before her visit to Israel, Baerbock added that the offensive cannot lead to the mass displacement of Palestinians into neighboring Egypt.
" It is our collective responsibility to the people who have sought refuge in Rafah to create corridors for them to reach safety. They can't move south because that's where the border is. Israel has the right to defend itself, but this right does not include deportation ," she said at a joint press conference with Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki in Berlin.
Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he had instructed the army to expand its ground operations in Rafah to root out Hamas militants held in southern Gaza.
" We urgently need a humanitarian ceasefire ," Baerbock said.
US President Joe Biden expressed his concerns on Monday about Israel's plans to move to Rafah, calling for a "credible plan to ensure the safety" of civilians sheltering there.
" We oppose any forced relocation of Palestinians from Gaza ," the president added.
After the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, in which at least 1,200 Israelis were killed and 253 were taken hostage, the Israeli army has been fighting its way into northern and central Gaza, ordering the population to flee south.
More than 28,000 Palestinians have died as a result of Israeli actions, according to Gaza's Hamas health ministry. Over a million Gazans are now crowded into Rafah, a city with a pre-war population of 250,000.
Shortages of food, fuel and medical supplies have worsened the situation on the ground and led to growing calls for a halt to the fighting./ SkyNews
