The fates of Prigozhin and Shoigu at the crossroads, what decision will Putin

Is Wagner group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin in Belarus? Will the Russian Minister of Defense, Sergei Shoigu, be dismissed? Major questions about Saturday's incident still remain unanswered...

The dust raised by the "Wagner" rebellion is settling down. The damage is deep and the question - "what will happen next?" - which can only be answered by Vladimir Putin, remains unclear.

After all that, the Kremlin broadcasts videos of the "business as usual" meeting, but nothing to see" from Putin's diary.

We also have video of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu inspecting a Western Command operational base, apparently in the "special military operation zone," allegedly this morning, though many voices on Telegram are hotly debating whether it was filmed before for the coup d'état to happen.

Meanwhile, Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin has apparently been told in no uncertain terms to keep his head down in Belarus for now even if he's not the type to keep quiet for long.

But what will happen to the military high command, which has just weathered weeks of criticism and a short-lived but dangerous armed rebellion?

How much credibility do they still have in the eyes of their own people when thousands if not hundreds of thousands serving in the Russian armed forces must have seen those Prigozhin videos and felt some truth?

Prigozhin was good at taking the side of his troops, pointing out the futility of the whole exercise in Ukraine, raging against the terrible and unnecessary loss of life.

That should mean a good deal if you're sitting on the front line wondering if you're next. Putin favors loyalty, and Shoigu and his chief of staff Valery Gerasimov have been anything but loyal.

The commander-in-chief will also not want to appear as if he has been forced to bow to pressure, especially not from Prigozhin, whom he has just denounced as a traitor.

But now there is speculation that he is looking for alternatives.

The governor of the Tula region, Alexei Dyumin, is one of those mentioned as a possible successor to Shoigu. If there is a reshuffle, then it will probably happen after the dust has settled.

It was also apparent from the whole contract debate that Shoigu had decided that the war in Ukraine should now be handled solely by the defense ministry and that all other independent units, such as Wagner, should be incorporated into the army as sheep. .

This was an indication that Shoigu was on the rise in Kremlin circles. Perhaps it was also why Prigozhin decided to make this uprising accidental, wanting Wagner to be seen on an equal but separate footing with the Russian armed forces, "Folie de grandeur" perhaps.

So if Putin replaces Shoigu now, he looks even weaker. Although given the lightning events of Saturday, everything is unpredictable despite the apparent calm of the last 24 hours./ Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Sky News"
