History is full of examples of all kinds of empires falling in the face of seemingly weaker opponents. From the biblical battle between David and Goliath and the American War of Independence against the giant British Empire, to the collapse of the Soviet Empire.
The victory of the "weak Davids" has always seemed unexpected, while the fall of the "all-powerful Goliaths" has always been sensational. We are on the verge of similar events, and the operation of the Ukrainian army in recent days in the Kursk region of Russia is a manifestation of them.
In fact, this operation takes into account the experience of Yevgeny Prigozhin's march to Moscow in 2023, which showed Russia's internal weakness and fragility. At that time, only 5,000 mercenary militia fighters were able to take control of the Rostov-on-Don region with a population of more than 1.1 million people, and march unopposed all the way to Moscow.
That sensational event highlighted Moscow's inability to wage a large-scale war on its territory. From that moment, it was only a matter of time before other operations were carried out, such as the Ukrainian army's operation in Kursk. Moreover, the survival of Ukraine as a state required this bold move.
Finally, in a theater of war in which there is a relatively stationary front line, similar to World War I, Russia has a strategic advantage over Ukraine. It was therefore vital for Kiev to transfer the battle to Russian territories, despite the objections of its Western partners and allies.
By the way, the latter have lost such wars against more mobile opponents. The operation in Kursk aims at only one thing: a bold move to "overturn the table". As the old Latin saying Fortis fortuna adiuvat goes, fortune favors the brave.
And at a time when all the circumstances were favorable for such an operation, Ukraine was able to accumulate the necessary troops and equipment in the Sumy-Kharkiv region, under the pretext of defense against a possible new Russian invasion. Therefore, they were collected without arousing suspicions on the part of Moscow.
At the same time, Russia is using all its resources in conducting offensive operations in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia sectors. Moreover, the Ukrainian media conducted a successful information campaign about a possible Russian offensive in northern Ukraine, which further lulled the enemy's vigilance.
The operation itself was being prepared for several months. And from the first days of the operation, we can say that everything was planned correctly. Ukrainian troops encountered an almost empty rearguard of Russian troops, which Moscow was unable to protect.
For this reason, the members of the Russian Security Council appeared so confused in front of the cameras at their meeting on August 7. They couldn't do anything. And all Vladimir Putin's statements on the provocative nature of the Ukrainian military operation are just empty words.
The operation in the Kursk region should be expanded in the coming days, with attacks in the rear of the front and even deeper, including the "Prigozhinskaya" highway M-4 and the direction to Chernihiv, with strikes on the logistics and communication network between the front in Donetsk and Russia. After all, fortune favors the brave.
The result of this operation, and subsequent attacks, will be a complete change in the nature of the war to mobility, where Ukraine will have the advantage. Russia is incapable of this type of tactic, as it does not have sufficient resources to defend all of its vast territory.
Like all empires before it, Russia is a colossus with feet of clay, destined to fall. Moreover, all fears of a possible retaliatory and unpredictable attack by Russia against Ukraine's fair and proactive defense have been repeatedly proven to be empty and unwarranted.
