Moscow's troops have been deployed in the Kursk region to try to slow down the offensive that has penetrated into the heart of Russian territory for five days.
However, the deployment takes place in a large gray area, where Kiev has laid deadly ambushes.
A convoy of fifteen truckloads of soldiers was destroyed within minutes while traveling at night near Rylsk.
Videos show burning vehicles and piles of corpses, believed to be at least two hundred dead and injured. This was one of the bloodiest ambushes of the entire conflict.
Russian analysts claim it is the work of American Himars missiles, but at the moment Washington does not allow the use of its long-range weapons across the border.
The biggest concern concerns the Kursk nuclear power plant. Yesterday afternoon there was an explosion and shortly after that the electricity was cut off in the whole area. Governor Alexei Smirnov said the outage "was caused by the remains of a downed enemy drone which caused a fire in the cable".
The Ukrainians have advanced with tanks capable of firing at forty kilometers. The fear is that they can shoot the power plant.
To stop the reinforcements that continue to cross the border, the Russian air force has begun bombing the Ukrainian district of Sumy, where the attack bases are located. The authorities have ordered the transfer of twenty thousand residents. It is not excluded that the Kremlin will take revenge in that area in the coming days, opening another war front. For now, however, Putin's generals are struggling to stop the enemy's advance.
The map where the battles are happening is confusing. The Russians are focusing their response on the three locations that mark the main lines of attack.
In the south, they maneuver into Suzda, to relieve two battalions of recruits and the Rosvgardia militia besieged at the city gates: the most intense fighting takes place in Plekhovo. There, together with the Wagner veterans, the Chechen commandos of the Aida group entered the action. One of their officers stated that "the operation takes time".
In the center, the most intense fighting has been recorded in Malaya Lokhna, near the highway to the capital. In the north, however, there is a struggle for control of Korenovo: four Ukrainian tanks tried to break into the suburbs, but were reportedly repulsed.
Losses appear to be heavy in both armies. Numerous Ukrainian armored vehicles have been destroyed or abandoned due to technical problems. The command focuses above all on speed and wants to go as deep as possible. At the same time, hundreds of pedestrians from Moscow were captured.
Since Wednesday, Mosk has called in units from the Kharkiv front, the closest and least strategic, to which brigades stationed in the capital or St. Petersburg are joining.
Meanwhile, the situation in Donbass remains critical for the defense of Ukraine. Another village fell yesterday and the Russians are now fifteen kilometers from Pokrovsk, making it increasingly difficult to defend the highway that supplies the front line in Donetsk.
There are dozens of attacks every day, also supported by tanks, planes and rockets. Yesterday, a supermarket was destroyed in Kostiantynivka, in the rear, killing fourteen civilians and injuring 40.
Kiev cannot send military aid: Commander Syrsky has committed all reserves to the offensive in Russia.
Two waves of drones hit Lipetsk airport, four hundred kilometers from the border, and blew up bomb dumps used by fighter bombers.
With the progress in Kursk, the Zelensky government not only wants to ease the pressure on Donbass: it is also aiming for a political outcome, related to the negotiation scenarios. Myhailo Podolyak, one of the president's advisers, made this clear yesterday: "Russia is beginning to understand that the war is slowly coming to its territory. When will it be possible to conduct a negotiation that allows us to get something from them ?Only when the conflict will not go according to their plans"./ Taken from "Repubblica"
