A Pakistani man with suspected ties to Iran has been charged in a botched assassination plot that may have targeted former President Donald Trump, US television network CNN reported, citing an official and court documents.

The FBI believes the plot targeted Trump and other current and former US government officials.

Asif Merchant, 46, is accused of traveling to New York and working with a hitman to carry out the killings in late August or early September, according to charges filed by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn, New York.

He was arrested on July 12 as he prepared to leave the United States, prosecutors said, shortly after meeting with suspected killers who he believed would carry out the killings but were actually undercover police officers.

The US administration has repeatedly raised concerns that Iran may seek revenge against the 2020 US drone strike that killed General Qasem Soleimani, the top general of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), by attempting to kill Trump or former his advisors.

US prosecutors have charged other people with similar assassination attempts in the past, including charges filed in 2022 against a 45-year-old Iranian national and IRGC member who allegedly tried to pay $300,000 for a person in the US to kill the former national security adviser. John Bolton. In that case, prosecutors allege the plan was "possible revenge" for Soleimani's death.
