The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the election of commander Yahja Sinwar as head of the movement's political bureau, succeeding the martyred commander Ismail Haniyeh.
Hamas has officially announced that Yahya Sinwar will be the new head of the terrorist group's Political Bureau, its most senior figure, following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week.
Since 2017, Sinwar has served as the leader of Hamas inside the Gaza Strip, now he will become the leader of its political wing.
The announcement comes at a time of heightened tension in the Middle East, as Iran and its allies threaten retaliation for Haniyeh's killing, which they blame on Israel.
" The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the election of commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of the movement, succeeding the martyred commander Ismail Haniyeh, may God have mercy on him ," said a brief statement of the movement.
News of the appointment was greeted with a barrage of bullets from Gaza by militant gangs still fighting Israeli troops in the besieged enclave.
Sinwar, who spent half his life growing up in Israeli prisons, was the most powerful Hamas leader left alive after Haniyeh's killing, which has left the region on the brink of a wider regional conflict after Iran pledged for a fierce revenge.
Born in a refugee camp in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, Sinwar, 61, was elected leader of Hamas in Gaza in 2017 after gaining a reputation as a ruthless enforcer and a staunch enemy of Israel.
He was previously the head of the Al-Majd security apparatus, which tracked down, killed and punished Palestinians accused of collaborating with the Israeli secret service before he was jailed.
He has been designated a global terrorist by the US State Department since 2015 and has recently been sanctioned by the United Kingdom and France.
Sinwar is also widely regarded as the architect of the October 7 invasion and massacre in southern Israel, in which some 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage, sparking the ongoing war in Gaza.
He has been hiding in Gaza since the massacre in Israel. The Israeli military in February released a video, filmed on October 10, that it said showed him walking through a Gaza tunnel with some of his family members.
Sinwar has been described as Israel's most wanted man in Gaza. The Israeli military has labeled him "the walking dead", dubbing him in a profile as "The Butcher of Khan Younis" for his alleged role in planning the October 7 attack./ Pamphlet
