The 41-year-old man claimed to have seen his 39-year-old wife with a knife on her during the night. Investigators consider his version of events to be unbelievable and are charging him with premeditated murder, domestic violence and weapons violations.
A serious incident shook the city of Kalamata in Greece, where a 41-year-old man admitted to murdering his 39-year-old wife in their apartment during the early hours of Monday morning.
According to Greek media and preliminary information from the investigation, the suspect told authorities that he suddenly woke up during the night and saw his wife on top of him holding a knife. In this way, he attempted to support the claim that he had acted in self-defense. However, investigators have not accepted this version of events.
The prosecution has filed charges against him for intentional murder, domestic violence and violation of weapons legislation.
Authorities expect the victim's autopsy to help fully clarify the circumstances of the crime, although they do not anticipate any fundamental changes in the direction of the investigation.
Neighbors' testimonies seem to contradict the 41-year-old's claims. Residents of the area reported that shortly before 2 a.m. they heard screams from the apartment, and in particular the woman's voice calling for help. They immediately notified the police, but when officers arrived at the scene, the woman had already suffered fatal injuries.
According to investigators, the suspect initially refused to open the door. After a while, he allowed police to enter, who found him with blood stains on his body, while the victim was lying on the bedroom floor with no signs of life. She had multiple wounds to her head and body, both from physical blows and from the knife.
Authorities suspect that the knife found in the victim's hand may have been placed there by the husband to later support his claim of self-defense. According to investigative sources, the evidence collected in the first moments led the suspect to confess to the crime.
The couple's two minor daughters, ages 6 and 10, were also in the apartment, and were sleeping at the time of the incident. The children have been taken to the Pediatric Clinic of Kalamata Hospital for care and observation.
According to Greek public broadcaster ERT, neighbors said arguments and fights were often heard coming from the apartment. Some of them claim to have heard the woman say: "If you hit me again, I'll call the police."
A friend of the victim, speaking to the media, said she had known him for many years and was unaware of any serious problems in the couple's relationship. She added that the family is taking care of the immediate needs of the two children.
In an official statement, the Greek Police confirmed the arrest of the 41-year-old and stated that he has confessed to the crime. Investigations are continuing by the Kalamata Crime Investigation and Clearance Unit to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
