After the terrorist attack in Bielefeld, the perpetrator has been sentenced to life imprisonment
The perpetrator of the terrorist attack on people celebrating in Bielefeld has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The Higher Regional Court in Düsseldorf found the 36-year-old Syrian guilty of four counts of attempted murder, determined the special gravity of his guilt and ordered preventive detention.
According to the judges, the convicted person pursued jihadist goals with the attack. With this decision, the Higher Regional Court in Düsseldorf imposed the maximum sentence requested by the Federal Prosecutor's Office. The defendant showed no empathy for the victims. Due to his radical Islamic beliefs, the Syrian man remained dangerous and his prognosis was extremely poor, the Federal Prosecutor's Office stated.
Before the verdict was announced, the defense pointed to the defendant's difficult childhood and depression diagnosed by a psychiatric expert. The Syrian man had confessed to the crime to psychologists and psychiatrists while in custody and admitted it in his closing statement at trial. He had also stated while in custody that he had already killed two people in Syria.
Four of the injured testified during the trial that they are still suffering from the attack. Just over a year ago, they were attacked while partying outside a bar in Bielefeld and suffered life-threatening stab wounds. The attacker shouted "Allahu Akbar," the presiding judge said.
The public prosecutor's office said the 36-year-old had been active for ISIS in Syria for years. He had pledged allegiance to the caliphate before being arrested by Kurdish forces as an ISIS member and imprisoned for eight months. He came to Germany in 2023. Before the attack, he sent a video claiming responsibility to an ISIS contact, but it was not made public. His goal was to kill as many people as possible. According to a psychiatric expert, the defendant is deeply radicalized by Islamist ideology. His mental health deteriorated in Germany.
