The Earth is facing 5 years of extreme heat, as a result of the El Nino phenomenon. According to a report by the World Meteorological Organization WMO, global temperatures in 2026-2030 will be up to 1.9 degrees Celsius higher than the average 100 years ago.
It is also thought that in 2027 temperatures will break the record of 2024 as the hottest year, as a result of the arrival of El Nino at the end of this year.
The report provides a summary of forecasts from 13 institutes around the world on a global scale.
El Nino is the warm phase of the natural ENSO climate cycle, characterized by an abnormal warming of the surface waters of the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
It provokes meteorological and climatic fluctuations on a global scale.
As a result of the movement of warm waters towards Australia and Indonesia and their subsequent accumulation in South America, the climate becomes extremely dry in the former areas, while in South America there are frequent rains and floods.
North America is affected by warm and dry winters, Eurasia by milder winters and heavier rainfall.
This phenomenon usually lasts 9-12 months, and is then followed by the opposite phase, La Nina, which is associated with a significant cooling of ocean waters.
