An unusual phenomenon has occurred in Switzerland, where, after high temperatures, the country has been hit by heavy rains, but also snowfalls in some areas.
MeteoSuiss reports that temperatures have dropped by 30 degrees Celsius in four days, causing days of hot sun to be replaced by snowfall.
"The temperature dropped impressively within four days. On Thursday, the station's thermometer read 31.2 °C. Today at 11:15 it was 0.5 °C,” the weather service MétéoSuisse reported on platform X.
The snowfall included the tourist area of Zermatt, which is located at an altitude of 1,638 meters above sea level.
Many mountain passes in the Alps, such as the Gotthard and Zimblon, remained closed today, due to heavy rain, which also caused landslides.
Even in the Italian-speaking areas of Switzerland, especially in the canton of Ticino, there have been heavy downpours, as meteorologists point out that snow will continue to fall in the high mountain areas.
Switzerland and its ecosystem are particularly affected by climate change. The situation in the glaciers is described as dramatic: between 2021-2022 they lost 6% of their volume.
