A massive fire engulfed a 10-story building in the Linkeroever area of Antwerp, Belgium, on Wednesday morning, causing at least five deaths and dozens of injuries.

The building, which was home to more than 200 people, was evacuated immediately after the flames broke out. According to authorities, some people suffered serious injuries and were transported to the hospital, while others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Antwerp police district spokeswoman Kim Bastien said the situation remains critical and that the search and rescue operation is continuing.

“Just before 10:00 a.m., a fire broke out in an apartment building on August Vandermeylelaan in Linkeover. It quickly became clear that it was a serious fire. There are several seriously injured and several lightly injured people receiving medical treatment at the scene. Unfortunately, there are also several dead. At the moment, firefighters are continuing their investigations to see if there are still people inside the building. We cannot give any figures at the moment, as the priority is currently to search for victims and provide medical assistance,” said Kim Bastien, spokeswoman for the Antwerp police district.

Firefighters explained that the flames broke out on the eighth floor of the building and not on the tenth floor, as initially reported. When emergency crews arrived on the scene, thick smoke had engulfed a large part of the building, making intervention and evacuation difficult.

A shocking video was also released during the operation, showing a resident climbing from his apartment balcony towards a neighbor's window to escape the black smoke.

A spokesman for the Antwerp Fire Department said the intervention presents great difficulties, although the flames are no longer in danger of spreading.

"This is a very complex fire. The fire is not yet under control, but it cannot spread any further. This is good news," said a spokesman for the Antwerp Fire Department.

Meanwhile, fire crews continue to search the building to find other people, using the list of the building's residents.

"We have found other people. Our climbing team has also been mobilized to evacuate people independently of the fire trucks with ladders," he said.
