The common threads between the Mexican cartels and Hamas, how the narco-jihad is

From building tunnels, to drugs and weapons, how Hamas cooperates with the Mexican Sinaloa

The conflict launched by Israel against Hamas after the unprecedented attack of October 7 has highlighted the importance of controlling the underground world, especially in the context of military operations conducted in urban environments.

The organization that has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 is not the only one today that has a monopoly in this field. Unexpectedly, in fact, the Sunni Islamists of the Palestinian territory would have signed an agreement with the Mexican narcos to transfer to the latter the knowledge and technologies to exploit the underground to their advantage.

Ismael "el Mayo" Zambada Garcia, lord of the Sinaloa cartel, considered by many to be the successor to El Chapo Guzman, was the one who forged an iron alliance with the fedayeen about ten years ago.

Under the agreement, Hamas would help its "cousins" overseas to build underground networks in border areas to allow the transfer of drugs into the United States, as well as to evade US and Mexican anti-drug agencies. Furthermore, the tunnels would also be used to escape rival groups.

The Islamic movement has considerable experience building tunnels – the so-called Gaza Metro is an estimated 500 kilometers long – and since at least 2001 it has used them to smuggle goods out of Egypt and launch attacks into the territory. Israeli.

The Jewish state has always monitored this threat, and since 2004, the Israeli military unit the IDF has specialized in tracking and destroying enemy underground networks, often through the use of robots. A strategy widely used in the ongoing ground operation in Gaza, which in recent days has led to the identification of the largest tunnel discovered so far by the forces of the Jewish State.

The first news about the collusion between Hamas and "el Mayo" was revealed in 2018 when Dany Tirza, a former Israeli army colonel, stated in an interview that the Islamists in Gaza receive money by supporting Mexican criminal groups for the construction of tunnels that operate" from Tijuana to San Diego for drug trafficking. That same year, Mossad agents reconstructed the movements of three militiamen who, after passing through Madrid, met some of Zambada's lieutenants in Tijuana, Mexico.

In exchange for transferring their narcotics skills, including building homemade bombs, the Islamists would receive US weapons and equipment, as well as drug shipments and training from Mexican "chemists" in the production and trade of captagon (a type of amphetamine). . The Shiites of Hezbollah were also involved in these traffickings. Captagon is known as the "jihad drug" and was found in several terrorists killed after the October 7 attack. Amphetamine pills are now particularly widespread in the Middle East, and neighboring Syria commands a significant portion of this market, so much so that it has earned the title of the world's last narco-state.

The deal between Hamas and the Sinaloa cartel is just the latest in a long line of collaborations between terrorist organizations and ruthless criminal groups often protected by collusion and deviant elements within the governments of fragile nations and beyond. However, the events in Gaza and the ongoing outbreaks of violence just steps away from the border with the United States remind political decision makers daily of the dangers they face by ignoring these international threats. /Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Inside Over"
