A United Nations report released Thursday condemned what it called a "rapid deterioration" of human rights in the occupied West Bank and urged Israeli authorities to end violence against the Palestinian population there.
According to the report by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), 300 Palestinians had been killed in the West Bank since October 7, the day Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the Union European - carried out a deadly attack in southern Israel and took hostages in the Palestinian enclave.
At least 105 deaths can be attributed to Israeli operations involving airstrikes or other military tactics in refugee camps or other populated areas. At least eight people were killed by Jewish settlers, the report said.
Tal Heinrich, a spokeswoman for the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, dismissed the report as "quite ridiculous".
"It completely underestimates the major security threats to Israelis coming out of Judea and Samaria," she said, referring to the West Bank by its biblical Hebrew names.
"Yes, we arrested hundreds of terror suspects in that area and we will continue to do whatever it takes to maintain our security," she said.
Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the use of unnecessary or disproportionate force against Palestinians in the West Bank was "extremely disturbing".
"I call on Israel to take immediate, clear and effective steps to end settler violence against the Palestinian population, to investigate all incidents of violence by settlers and Israeli security forces, to ensure effective protection of Palestinian communities," he said.
The OHCHR said it had also recorded arbitrary detentions, illegal detentions, reported cases of torture and other forms of ill-treatment of Palestinian prisoners, and added that some 4,785 Palestinians had been arrested in the West Bank since 7 October.
"Some were stripped naked, blindfolded and held for hours with handcuffs and bound legs, while Israeli soldiers stomped on their heads and backs, spat on them, slammed them against walls, threatened them, insulted them, humiliated them and in some cases they have been subject to sexual violence and gender-based violence," said an OHCHR statement regarding the report.
The Israeli military has said it is operating against suspected militants in the West Bank and has launched investigations into possible abuse of detainees.
The war in Gaza erupted after Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages in attacks in southern Israel on October 7 - the worst attack in the country's history.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza has said that over 21,000 people have been killed and over 55,000 injured as a result of the Israeli offensive.
So far, it is believed that all 2.3 million residents of Gaza have been forced to leave their homes./ REL
