The Israeli Air Force (IAF) carried out the largest airstrike in its history, involving around 200 fighter jets that struck approximately 500 military targets in Iran on Saturday, according to an official announcement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
This operation, codenamed "Roaring Lion", was described as the largest air strike formation ever carried out by Israel, planned for months and coordinated with high intelligence.
The planes dropped hundreds of munitions on targets in western and central parts of Iran, almost simultaneously.
The attacks took place in two main waves: The first wave focused on destroying dozens of radars and air defense systems, especially in the areas closest to Israel and around Tehran, to pave the way for subsequent waves and establish air supremacy.
The second wave struck Iran's ballistic missile infrastructure, aiming to significantly reduce Tehran's ability to launch missiles toward Israeli territory. One of the key targets was a site in the Tabriz area, from where Iran had planned to launch dozens of ballistic missiles toward Israel.
The IDF said the operation aims to establish and maintain air supremacy over Iran, something Israel partially achieved in June 2025, by allowing Israeli drones and aircraft to hover over critical areas to destroy missile launch teams before they are activated.
A video released by the IDF shows footage from the first waves of the strikes, showing precision strikes on defense systems and missiles. The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Israel, the US and Iran, following previous mutual attacks and repeated warnings.
Iran has launched missile strikes on Israel, while the situation remains very tense with sirens and calls for shelter on both sides. Israeli authorities emphasize that the operation is ongoing and aims to seriously degrade the Iranian regime's offensive capabilities.
