Iran asks UN to intervene, Pentagon rules out sending forces to the ground
Moments from the attacks in Tehran

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi sent a letter to the UN Security Council, requesting immediate intervention by the 15 members and stating that Israel and the United States have violated international law by attacking Iran.

The United States and the Israeli regime bear full and direct responsibility for all consequences that will follow, including any escalation resulting from their illegal actions ,” Araghchi wrote. He added that “all bases, structures and assets of hostile forces in the region will be considered legitimate military targets within the framework of Iran’s exercise of its right to self-defense.” The Iranian top diplomat called on the UN to “act immediately.”

The Security Council is expected to meet today at 10:00 p.m. The session will open with a speech by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who a few hours ago condemned the escalation and the risks it poses to international security.

Before the meeting, Israel's UN ambassador, Danny Danon, will appear before the media outside the Council chamber. Today is the last day of Britain's month-long presidency of the Security Council; from tomorrow, the agenda shifts to the United States.

In an interview with CNN, retired US General David Petraeus stated that he does not expect the deployment of US troops on the ground in Iran. "I do not believe that there will be any US soldiers on the ground. There may be a very limited presence or other assets, but in secure areas," said the former CIA director, speaking about the possibility of a US ground operation.
