Another shocking case has occurred in France, where three masked men kidnapped and brutally raped a couple in La Rochelle, forcing them to transfer around 8 million euros in cryptocurrencies, the French prosecutor's office announced today.

According to a statement by Rennes city prosecutor Frédéric Teissier, the incident occurred on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, when the perpetrators, described as a "structured criminal group", forced their way into the couple's home on the country's west coast.

After tying them up and raping them for about two hours, the robbers forced the victims to make large transfers in cryptocurrency to addresses they controlled. The case is currently under investigation for kidnapping, extortion, hostage-taking and participation in a criminal organization.

The incident confirms a growing trend of kidnappings aimed at stealing cryptocurrencies, which is spreading at a worrying rate in France.

The La Rochelle case is not isolated. This year alone, several similar incidents have been recorded, where figures connected to the cryptocurrency world or their families have been kidnapped, raped, and extorted.

In January, a 56-year-old man was found dead in the trunk of a car near Le Mans, hundreds of kilometers from his home. According to French media, he was the father of a prominent Dubai-based cryptocurrency influencer.

Also in January, David Balland, co-founder of the popular Ledger platform, and his partner were kidnapped in the central Sèvres region. Balland was amputated on one finger before being rescued by a police operation, while his partner was found tied up inside a car.

In Paris, on May 1, the father of a Malta-based crypto manager was kidnapped and also tortured – the perpetrators cut off one of his fingers and demanded millions of euros for his release. He was released after 58 hours in captivity.

Just a few days later, on May 13, a video went viral showing the attempted kidnapping of the daughter and grandson of the CEO of Paymium, another important name in the crypto sector.
