Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Russia is ready to stop attacks on Ukraine so that Kiev can hold elections.
He said that Ukrainian citizens living in Russia should also be able to participate in the vote.
The Kremlin has led calls for Volodymyr Zelensky, whose term as president was scheduled to end in 2024, to hold wartime elections in Ukraine, despite the country's constitution not allowing them to be called during wartime.
Ukraine has expressed concern that Russia could easily interfere in its elections and said it would be impossible to bring Ukrainians to the polls en masse for fear of deadly Russian attacks.
Despite this, Zelensky has suggested that he could hold elections if Ukraine's security can be guaranteed during the vote. This came after US President Donald Trump called for the elections to be held and suggested that Zelensky's government is "using war" to avoid going to the polls.
