Nahel M's grandmother has called for calm after a fifth night of unrest across France after her 17-year-old grandson was killed by police in Paris.
"We don't want them to destroy shops, buses and schools. They are using Nahel as an excuse. We want things to calm down," Nadia told BFM TV.
She said she believes the police officer responsible for her nephew's murder will be punished, while adding that "my heart is hurting" when asked about the money donated to the police officer after Nahel's murder.
"I am tired. It is over, my child is no longer alive. Don't destroy the schools, don't destroy the buses. There are many mothers who use those buses," she said.
About 2,800 people have been arrested in total since Naheli's death on June 27. The massive police deployment has been welcomed by some frightened residents of the targeted neighborhoods and shopkeepers whose shops have been looted. But this action has further angered those who see the behavior of the police as the cause of the current crisis in France.
Hundreds of French police and firefighters have been injured in the riots that erupted after Nahel's murder, although authorities have not released figures for injured protesters. In French Guiana, a 54-year-old man died after being hit by a blind bullet.
In the fifth night of unrest sparked by Nahel's murder, police announced that 719 people had been arrested, compared to 1,311 arrests the previous night across France. Protesters threw fireworks and lit bonfires as barricades, while police responded with tear gas and stun grenades.
A burning car hit the home of the mayor of the Paris suburb of l'Hay-les-Roses overnight. Several schools, police stations and shops have been burned and vandalized in recent days, but such a personal attack on a mayor's home is unusual.
