Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Russian President Vladimir Putin sees Yevgeny Prigozhin as a threat to his power, writes "The Hill".
Prigozhin pulled his Wagner Group mercenaries from the front line in Ukraine a few days ago and marched them toward Moscow, vowing to topple the Russian military leadership. After the negotiations, he went to Belarus.
" I think his top military leaders General Gerasimov and Defense Minister Shoigui told Putin that Prigozhin was getting too powerful ," Pompeo said Sunday in an interview with radio host John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM.
" I think they were starting to limit it. Putin wasn't liking it anymore ," Pompeo added.
While the reasons why Prigozhin turned against Moscow and what the future holds for him and Putin are still unknown, Pompeo claimed that the betrayal of Wagner's boss will cause a shock in the Russian oligarchy.
" I am convinced that Putin began to think that Prigozhin was threatening his power ," Pompeo said.
Pompeo argued that he does not believe that Putin will allow another person to become as powerful as Prigozhin was.
The former Trump administration official also said he doubts Prigozhin could return to his former position as a close ally of Putin.
"I wouldn't insure his life. He's unlikely to find favor with Vladimir Putin again. It's hard to know whether this will end in bad tea or just permanent exile," he said.
