Today, Moldova's parliament began taking measures to prevent members of the outlawed pro-Russian party Shor from running in local elections with other parties or as independents.
The Constitutional Court declared the party unconstitutional last June, but on Tuesday clarified that its members have the right to participate in local elections on November 5, as long as they do not represent Shor.
The party, led by exiled businessman Ilan Shor, has been staging protests against President Maia Sandu and her government for months over high commodity prices. Sandu accused Shore and Russia of trying to destabilize Moldova after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which she strongly criticized.
Today, in a move aimed directly at Shor members, parliament approved an amendment to the Electoral Code to ban "certain individuals" from running for office in local elections. Law enforcement agencies are required to submit a list of names to the Central Election Commission, which will draw up the final list of persons banned from participating in the elections.
Earlier today, an emergency government committee, led by Prime Minister Doreen Rechean, ordered the drawing up of such a list "to ensure democratic processes in future elections and to eliminate danger to the state".
" The Kremlin wants its oligarch (Shor) to gain power in Moldova so he can get away with criminal charges, dance to the Kremlin's tune and stab Ukraine in the back. We will not allow it ", said the deputy speaker of the Assembly, Mihai Popsoi.
Shor, who lives in Israel, was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison last April for a banking and money laundering scandal. The US and the European Union have imposed sanctions on him. Both he and Russia deny they want to destabilize Moldova. Moscow also denies Sandu's accusations that he tried to overthrow him.
On Tuesday, Chisinau's ambassador to Moscow was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry and informed that Russia will take similar measures, after the head of the Sputnik Moldova agency was expelled from Moldova on September 13.
