Fearing a nuclear disaster, the International Atomic Energy Agency wants more

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for additional access to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine to confirm whether there are mines or explosives inside.

This is after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week repeated warnings that Russia is planning provocations at the Russian-occupied facility.

The Ukrainian military said foreign objects similar to explosive devices had been placed on the roof of the power plant.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement on July 5 that the IAEA is aware of reports that mines and other explosives have been placed in and around the nuclear power plant.

The IAEA is now seeking access to the roofs of reactor units three and four, where Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned there could be explosive devices.

Access to parts of the turbine halls and the cooling system at the plant has also been requested.

" With military tension and increasing activities in the region where this large nuclear power plant is located, our experts must be able to verify the facts on the ground ," the IAEA said.
