Poland and Italy believe that Ukraine should accept genuine security guarantees. This is what the prime ministers of these countries declared on July 5, a few days before the NATO summit, a meeting in which Kiev hopes that it will receive a strong signal that one day it will join the alliance.
Ukraine is demanding that NATO, during a July 11-12 summit in Vilnius, declare that Kiev can join the alliance after the end of the war with Russia and provide a roadmap for membership.
But some NATO members, such as the United States and Germany, have been more cautious and have warned against any moves they fear could bring the alliance closer to an active war with Russia.
Moscow has been saying for a long time that the expansion of NATO is evidence of the hostility of the West.
"We fully agree with Poland that real security guarantees are needed for Ukraine, but their provision is also a key condition for achieving a just and long-term peace in the future," said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during her visit to Warsaw.
Meloni reiterated that Italy will continue to "offer support" to Ukraine "as long as it is necessary", adding that "this also applies to the summit that will be held in Vilnius".
The Italian prime minister is a strong supporter of Kiev despite the fact that in her governing coalition there are subjects who in the past have been close to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
Meanwhile, the Polish Prime Minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, said that both countries have the same positions regarding Ukraine, which is facing the unprovoked Russian invasion since February of last year./REL
