The Kremlin has hinted it may be open to a possible prisoner swap with the US, including jailed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, but reiterated that such talks should be kept out of the public eye.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Gershkovich, who has been behind bars in Moscow since March on espionage charges, could be involved in the swap with Vladimir Dunaev, a Russian citizen in US custody who is accused of cyber crimes.
" We have said that there were contacts on this topic, but we do not want them to be discussed in public," Peskov said at a press conference. "They must be carried out and continue in complete silence ", he emphasized.
Dunaev was extradited from South Korea on US cybercrime charges and is in custody in Ohio.
