The White House announced that the US government will start operating flights to evacuate Americans who want to leave Israel, as Israel has warned that it is preparing to escalate its retaliation against the Palestinian militants of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Flights from Israel carrying Americans who want to leave are expected to begin Friday, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.
The US government is preparing to operate at least four flights a day from Israel to Frankfurt, Germany, sources close to the matter told The Associated Press.
The announcement comes as the White House said the number of Americans killed in violence between Israel and Hamas has now reached 27.
Thousands of people have been killed in Israel and Gaza since Hamas launched its surprise attack on Israel on October 7. Israel retaliated strongly with attacks on the Gaza Strip.
Fourteen American citizens in Israel are considered missing. The White House has also confirmed that several Americans are among the dozens of people that Hamas has taken hostage.
On October 12, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, visited Israel, where he met with the Prime Minister of this country, Benjamin Netanyahu.
