First punishment then forgiveness: the co-treasonous treatment of the head of the Wagner troupe, Prigozhin, has caused confusion. Russia is insecure.
"Pack your things and come to us as soon as possible!" Such appeals have been received by many in the Russian South from their friends and society in different parts of Russia. The situation in the region since the beginning of the war, due to its proximity to Ukraine, has been tense, but last weekend it became dangerous. This time the danger came from the Russian troops themselves, more precisely from Yevgeny Prigozhin's "Wagner" armed troops.
"Treason in wartime is a crime"
"My neighbor downstairs in the building got a call from the girl: Mom, you don't have to stay in Rostov anymore, come to us," an elderly woman from Rostov-on-Don, a city that was temporarily occupied by Russian troops, told Deutsche Wellen.
There was not only fear and uncertainty there, as no one knew how far Prigozhin would go with his army. His people were located about 200 km away from the Russian capital, Moscow. The mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, called on the population not to make excursions in the surroundings.
Uncertainty, that Prigoshin was praised in the state media, only a few hours later by the same media was anathema. "Armed uprising in Russia, which was not supported by society!" "Treason in wartime is a crime!" With these statements, moderator Dmitri Kiselev began the evening program on Russian television Rossia, a day after the coup attempt. After that, footage of the withdrawal of the tanks was shown with commentary. "The fratricidal war was thwarted."
Defeat to the Russian army
Moderator Kiselev was trying to present the version of success propagated by the Kremlin. According to the motto, things could have been worse, great bloodshed was prevented. But since in the coup attempt at least 10 Russian army soldiers were shot dead by Prigozhin's private army, this was forgotten. Prigozhin's acquittal caused more irritation. The one who was previously wanted as a "serious criminal" a few hours later was considered a free man, against whom every kind of investigation was withdrawn. According to the Russian agency, RIA on Tuesday it was announced that all charges against Prigozhin and his troupe were dropped. At a time when Putin threatened Prigozhin and all those who participated in the coup with severe punishments. A little later he thanked his opponent for interrupting the march towards Moscow at the right time.
Is the power of the state disintegrating?
Russian state media had to explain the confusing situation to their public again. For the director of the Russian foreign television, RT, Margarita Simonyan, this explanation had this logic: "Legal norms are not the commandments of Christ, nor the Decalogue of Moses. They are written by people, to guarantee order and stability in the country. If in an extraordinary critical situation they no longer fulfill their function, but have the opposite effect, then… to hell with them!”
For the Russian philosopher Denis Grekov, Simonyan's explanation is nothing more than a declaration of the failure of the Russian state. In a conversation with Deutsche Wellen, he states that "a state in which there is no longer a monopoly of power and there is no longer a unified power, and where legal norms no longer apply, is essentially no longer a state."
Propaganda researcher, Maria Borsunova, in a conversation with DW, concludes that "Margarita Simonjan tries to explain that, as a whole, the system of laws and criminal prosecution in Russia is oriented towards needs. The need for it can one day open a criminal case, and close it again. According to the motto, what is needed at the moment."
"Patriotic public opinion"
Denis Grekov expects Prigozhin to be admired even further in the so-called "patriotic public opposition" in Russia. The fighting that the private army carried out for several months in Bahmut was raised in the Russian media as an "act of heroes". According to Grekov, even representatives of the power structures, led by representatives from the Russian army, have admiration for the war lord. Many are disappointed by Defense Minister Shoigu and President Putin. Next year, many Russians will elect a new president. It is not known if Yevgeni Prigozhin, who has political ambitions, will decide his candidacy. President Putin has not yet ruled out his candidacy for the highest post. At least until now./DW
