US President Donald Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House next Monday, July 7. The meeting will focus on brokering a ceasefire in Gaza and a deal to release hostages.
The news was confirmed by two US administration officials. It is understood that this visit will be Netanyahu's third to Washington since Trump returned to office in January and comes at a time when regional tensions are high, following the US military intervention in the conflict between Israel and Iran, which included attacks on Iranian nuclear plants. After brokering a ceasefire between the two powers, the US president's attention has now turned to the war in Gaza.
Trump earlier expressed optimism that "within the next week we will achieve a ceasefire in Gaza," but did not provide concrete details regarding this prediction.
Meanwhile, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt confirmed that the administration is in constant communication with the Israeli leadership and that ending the war remains one of the president's top priorities.
"It's heartbreaking to see the images that have come out of Israel and Gaza throughout this war, and the president wants it to end. He wants to save lives," Leavitt said.
Ahead of the presidential meeting, Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer is in Washington this week to hold intensive talks with senior American officials, including issues such as: a possible ceasefire agreement in Gaza, the situation with Iran following the military escalation, and the political and humanitarian future of the Gaza Strip.
The upcoming Trump-Netanyahu meeting is expected to be crucial for the progress of American diplomatic efforts in the region and a clear signal of active US involvement in managing the Israeli-Palestinian crisis.
