Investigators discovered 383 abandoned bodies and the remains of six other people in a crematorium in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, following an anonymous tip.
Chihuahua state prosecutor Cesar Jauregui said on Monday that the people had been dead for at least three or four years and that the crematorium itself may have been closed in the past due to violations of health regulations following the coronavirus.
The bodies were found piled up one on top of the other, while preliminary examination indicates that most of the bodies were embalmed, as reported by the police who were at the scene.
"The bodies will be examined to determine if there was any illegal act. So far, the violations relate to non-compliance with health regulations and improper disposal of the bodies," Khauregui said.
"(The crematorium) was constantly accepting bodies for cremation. Hundreds of times they falsely declared to funeral companies that they would cremate these bodies," Hauregui told reporters on Monday, international media reported.
He added that he is working with funeral homes to identify families who may have received the "ashes" of their deceased loved ones.
Authorities still don't know why so many bodies were stored at the crematorium, which cooperated with six funeral homes in the city. The bodies were discovered last Thursday.
Khauregui said the crematorium owner and an employee have been arrested.
