G7 opens in France, Trump: Now focus on Ukraine, Hormuz reopens on Friday
G7 Summit

Leaders of the most industrialized countries gathered in Évian-les-Bains amid global crises, while the new agreement between the US and Iran dominated the first meetings of the summit.

The G7 summit has officially begun in Évian-les-Bains, France, where leaders of the seven largest democratic economies have gathered at a moment that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz described as "extremely turbulent for world politics."

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte welcomed the leaders at the Hotel Royal, the summit venue, overlooking Lake Geneva. The first to arrive was US President Donald Trump, who was followed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, as well as the heads of the main European Union institutions.

The focus of the first day was on the bilateral meeting between Macron and Trump, held just before the official opening ceremony of the summit. The US president described his French counterpart as "a special friend", noting that the two have collaborated on a number of international issues.

For his part, Macron described the agreement reached between the US and Iran as an important step for international stability.

" We will take our responsibilities to support this agreement, which constitutes a very important step for peace and the global economy ," the French president declared.

Trump confirmed that the deal with Tehran remains the top priority of the moment, announcing that the Strait of Hormuz is expected to fully reopen on Friday.

" We are still looking for some sea mines, but the ships have already started moving. We now have very good relations with Iran and with the new leadership ," he declared.

The US president did not rule out the possibility of personally traveling to Switzerland for the official signing ceremony of the agreement with Iran, scheduled for Friday.

" JD Vance will be there. I may be there, I may not be there. It will depend on the developments in the coming days ," Trump said.

Despite the importance of the Iranian file, the head of the White House emphasized that after this agreement, the focus of his administration will shift to the war in Ukraine.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also expressed the same view, stating that the summit is taking place in a challenging period for the international order, but added that he sees new signs of diplomatic progress in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

" Ukraine is in a stronger position today. Russia cannot win militarily and its economy has weakened. For the first time, a window for diplomacy can gradually open ," Merz said.

Meanwhile, the summit has also been marred by protests against the G7. Swiss authorities announced that more than 20 people were escorted to the police and three were arrested after incidents were recorded during anti-G7 demonstrations in Geneva. Police reported clashes with radical groups, the use of tear gas and damage to police vehicles.

After the traditional family photo, the G7 leaders attended the inaugural dinner, which marks the start of discussions expected to be dominated by the US-Iran deal, the war in Ukraine, energy security and the future of the global economy. / Pamphlet
