Today's Trumpism could become the rope we hang ourselves with tomorrow
Giorgia Meloni's capitalization error is easily recognizable. It is her complete Trumpism. Some thought that her confusion with history was related to history itself, that of yesterday: fascism, neo-fascism; but no. More specifically, it is about her total submission to the leader of the gang that has been installed in Washington. Far from being a "bridge": hers is worse than Matteo Salvini's. Meloni is exaggerating. Yesterday she went so far as to express the hope that in the future the Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to the man of whom "God is proud", that is, to the one who ordered the ICE hitmen. He may have been "resolute" about Greenland, but he is essentially right; and for Ukraine "he" will be able to make peace. Gaza is not even mentioned: the skyscrapers are already too high... This is what she thinks and says.
Trumpism "will be her problem during the election campaign" , predicts Paolo Gentiloni. Of course. Because even in Italy fear, antipathy or even contempt for the White House gogol is growing; while, on the contrary, an ever-greater sense of belonging to Europe is strengthening, seen precisely as a shield against Trump. All the polls confirm this: the American president is considered a threat.
"Meloni must be careful, managing this last year before the elections carefully, so as not to squander her legacy of consensus. Polls suggest that she will distance herself, at least a little, from the American president, whom even right-wing voters do not seem to like ," wrote Lina Palmerini in Il Sole 24 Ore.
But the prime minister doesn't seem to be succeeding. Meloni has chosen Trump not as an interlocutor to be managed, but as a point of reference. Not as an ally among others, but as the symbolic center of a vision. That's the point.
Trumpism is not just an American phenomenon: it is a method of power, a political culture, a worldview based on the extreme personalization of command, the renunciation of institutional mediation, and the subordination of collective interests to the logic of personal loyalty. And it is precisely this idea that Meloni seems to be increasingly committed to.
In recent weeks, she immediately covered (“it is legitimate”) the American action in Venezuela, only to end up enthusiastically supporting the Peace Council, until the Quirinale reminded her of her constitutional obligation not to participate. But she will not give up: yesterday she left the door open again for entry into that conclave of rich people and various bandits, hoping that there would be no more obstacles. She tried to be received in Davos by the Emperor of Washington, but he had other things to do, so she did not go. She coddles him in every way. She never creates a common front with other Europeans.
She is his ideological torchbearer, convinced that that character has the world in his hands, which is only partially true and which, if it were completely true, would be one more reason to restrain him.
Ultimately, Gentiloni is right when he asks: " What do we gain from this? " What has Italy gained from the special relationship with the American Mastiff? What was the purpose of wagging the tail at Mar-a-Lago (apart from interceding for Cecilia Sala, but that's not a political issue), of winking with big smiles towards the White House, if not the personal image of a television Giorgia who is no longer a weakling, but a supported weakling?
Of course, the American god doesn't care about anyone, much less if he's sincere when he showers her with praise. Only she believes she's been touched by the grace of a mythomaniac, whose dangerousness and mental instability the Italians have already sensed. Tying yourself hand and foot to Donald Trump doesn't show courage, much less vision.
