
Seven candidates will compete in the presidential elections in North Macedonia that will be held on April 24.
The State Election Commission (SEC) announced that until Friday midnight, seven of the eleven candidates presented have managed to collect 10,000 signatures, which are necessary to participate in the presidential race.
The opposition VMRO DPMNE will compete in the elections with the current MP Gordana Siljanovska*Davkova, who has collected 28,000 signatures.
The ruling Social Democratic League will compete with the current president, Stevo Pendarovski, who has submitted around 22,000 signatures to the SEC.
In the election race, the Democratic Union for Integration will compete with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bujar Osmani, who has collected about 11,000 signatures, while the united Albanian opposition with Arben Taravar, the current mayor of Gostivar, who has collected more than 10,000 signatures.
Maksim Dimitrievski, the mayor of the municipality of Kumanova, Stevçe Jakimovski, the mayor of the municipality of Karpoš in Skopje and Biljana Vankovska, candidate of the "Left" party, will also be part of the election race.
The ranking of the candidates for the voting list will be announced after the lottery, which will be held on March 28.
The first round of the presidential elections will be held on April 24, while the second, together with the parliamentary elections, on May 8.
These elections are considered very important for the European future of the country, while they also serve as a test for the parliamentary elections that will be held together with the second round of the presidential elections.
According to public opinion research, VMRO DPMNE, which is in opposition to SDSM, is in a clear lead, both for the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Based on the current Constitution, in the first round it is almost impossible to elect the president, as the candidate must receive more than half of the votes of those registered in the electoral roll or half of the votes of 1.8 million voters.
In the second round, the two candidates with the most votes pass, while the candidate with the most votes is elected the winner, provided that more than 40 percent of the electorate turn out for the election.
