The Hungarian newspaper 'Nepszava' writes that developments surrounding the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) in Serbia could constitute a new political blow for Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. According to it, the process also mentions the influence of Hungarian politics in the fight for media control.
According to the newspaper's analysis, the pressure from the European Union to make REM operational has forced the Serbian government to take concrete steps. However, the authorities in Belgrade, according to Nepszava, have not shown any real willingness to guarantee the independence of this institution.
After a prolonged blockade and the resignation of several independent members, some of them have decided to return to the REM Council, paving the way for the institution to resume its functioning.
The newspaper estimates that this development could affect the balance of the media scene in Serbia, especially if the ninth member of the REM Council is elected by an independent figure who is not close to the government in Belgrade.
According to Nepszava, an important role in this process could be played by Peter Magyar, the Hungarian Prime Minister, who, according to the newspaper, could influence the change in political relations in Serbia as well.
The analysis emphasizes that the selection of the new REM member could be crucial, as the appointment of a candidate who does not support the political line of the government could weaken the influence of allies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and bring changes to the Serbian media landscape.
In conclusion, Nepszava criticizes the state of the media in Serbia, assessing that a large part of them have become instruments of political and personal confrontations, while REM, for years, has not effectively exercised its role as a regulatory authority for electronic media.
