Germany's Defense Ministry has announced that it is suspending activities on Elon Musk's Platform X amid accusations that the social media platform is spreading disinformation ahead of the February 23 snap elections.
The German ministry said it would "no longer proactively post on its X account for the foreseeable future", arguing that "the exchange of fact-based arguments is becoming increasingly difficult".
Further, the ministry said that it will use a WhatsApp channel in the future as an alternative to provide information about appointments and relevant decisions by the minister, as well as news from the ministry.
Last week, more than 55 universities and research institutes in Germany announced that they would no longer post content on X, arguing that a “fact-based exchange, open discourse and transparency” was no longer possible.
The German government has accused Musk of interfering in the upcoming vote after he, the world's richest person and an ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, expressed open support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Last week, he also held an X-conversation with AfD's chancellor candidate, Alice Weidel.
At a press conference in Berlin, deputy government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann stressed that while the American billionaire is free to express his opinion, "in fact, Elon Musk is trying to influence the federal election through his statements."
