The International Court of Justice begins examining the issue of the Palestinian

The International Court of Justice today began a landmark hearing on the legality of Israel's 57-year occupation of territories that Palestinians say should be part of their future state.

At the start of the hearing, the Palestinian Authority's foreign minister accused Israel of apartheid while asking the court to declare Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories illegal. He also called on the Israeli government to withdraw immediately and unconditionally from the occupied Palestinian territories.

The developments at the Hague-based court are taking place against the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war, which immediately became a major topic of the day, although the hearings were intended to focus only on Israel's control of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem .

Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said he is before the International Court of Justice "while 2.3 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, half of them children, are under siege, being bombed, being killed, suffering from famine and displaced from their homes".

The International Court of Justice's handling of the case, which is expected to last six days, follows a request by the UN General Assembly for a non-legally binding advisory opinion on Israel's policies in the occupied territories, the West Bank and the Strip. of Gaza.

UN tribunal members are likely to take months to issue a ruling on the matter.

Meanwhile, many pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the court, waving flags and banners in support of the Palestinians and calling for an end to the war in the Gaza Strip./ VOA
