90 million euro robbery at the Louvre, guard confesses: I saw the perpetrators
The Robbery of the Louvre

As investigators race against time to track down the gang that spectacularly stole the royal jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris, France, last weekend, startling evidence from the day of the event is being uncovered.

The few minutes of the major robbery worth 90 million euros were recounted by a museum guard who was present at the time in the "Apollo" hall.

The guard responded via BFMTV to the criticism he and his colleagues received, who were accused of inaction.

"We are receptionists, not police officers. Our priority is the safety of people and facilities," he stressed.

At 9:30 a.m., when the robbery occurred, there were usually between 10 and 50 guests in the Apollon room. The security guard said they had to be secured first. He himself said he did not leave the room completely.

"I hid near an emergency exit to see the scene and pass on information to the police. I saw them cutting the glass," he says. The security guard says that inside the room "you couldn't hear anything, because of the noise from the cutting wheel."

The robbers did not try to prevent him from seeing the scene. As he says, such a thing “was not their priority. They were interested in the windows. I don’t even know if they saw us.” After all, he added, “the robbery happened within a few minutes.”

However, he couldn't hear what they were saying to each other because of the noise from the glass cutting machine.

"I won't tell you I wasn't afraid, but I didn't really feel scared because they were determined and didn't bother with us at all," he noted.

After her initial thanks to the Louvre security staff on Sunday, Rachida Dati, the Minister of Culture, reiterated on Tuesday, October 22, through the newspaper Le Parisien, her support for the workers. “I do not accept these targeted attacks and the shameful instrumentalization of such a serious event,” she said.

The minister expressed her regret "for the false information circulating since Sunday, which calls into question the museum's internal security systems and, consequently, the employees responsible for them."

Dati reiterated that "all alarm systems were activated at every breach, from the window to the display cases. No system was damaged."

President Emmanuel Macron asked his cabinet on Wednesday to "accelerate security measures" at the Louvre. He expects a list of proposals in his office next week.
