The College of Cardinals, after a closed process loaded with the weight of history, has selected the successor to Pope Francis, who passed away this Easter, leaving behind a profound legacy of reforms and confrontations with challenges inside and outside the Church.
At the moment of the announcement, which is expected to happen any minute now, the Cardinal Protodeacon will go out onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and proclaim with the famous Latin formula: Habemus Papam! (We have a Pope!). Immediately afterwards, the figure of the new Pope will appear for the first time before the world, to give the Urbi et Orbi blessing, one of the most symbolic and universal moments of the Catholic Church...
According to the latest sources, one of the most talked about names and closest to being elected as the new Pope is Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and a figure very close to Pope Francis.
He is known for his commitment to social issues, interfaith dialogue, and support for the poor – qualities that are in keeping with the spirit of Francis’ pontificate. Zuppi has also been one of the Vatican’s trusted diplomats, including on the Ukraine issue.
Other candidates mentioned by international media:
Cardinal Pietro Parolin – Vatican Secretary of State, with extensive diplomatic experience;
Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline – French progressive with an emphasis on integration and multiculturalism;
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle – Filipino, very popular and with wide support outside Europe;
