The Palestinian militant group Hamas has agreed to the latest draft of the United States' proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, officially notifying Qatar, Egypt and the US of its approval.
The news was confirmed by a Hamas official, who said that their delegation has given verbal consent to the agreement, which includes a cessation of fighting and an exchange of hostages, while final written approval is awaited.
According to Reuters, the new proposal, which calls for the release of ten hostages and a 70-day ceasefire, was received by Hamas through intermediaries.
The agreement, negotiated with the mediation of Egypt and Qatar, comes after 15 months of fierce conflict that has left over 46,000 dead in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and destroyed much of the enclave's infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced that he would return to Israel urgently to attend security cabinet votes to discuss the deal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that any decision would depend on guarantees for the release of the remaining hostages, following allegations of Hamas violating the agreement.
