French President Emmanuel Macron has reacted to footage that went viral online, in which it appears at one point that his wife punches him in the face.
Speaking to reporters in Hanoi on Monday, Macron dismissed the speculation.
" There's a video that shows me joking and teasing my wife and somehow this turns into some kind of geo-planetary catastrophe, with people even coming up with theories to explain it ," the president said.
Macron acknowledged that the footage was real, but said how it had been used as a weapon. " The videos are all real and yes, sometimes people manipulate them, but people attribute all kinds of nonsense to them ."
The short clip shows the plane door opening with Macron appearing at the door. Seconds later, both of Brigitte Macron's hands are seen on the president's face in what appears to be a slap.
Macron looks surprised for a moment, but quickly regains his composure and gestures to the press outside.
As the couple descend the stairs, Macron offers his arm to Brigitte, but she refuses. The Elysee Palace initially denied the incident on the plane, before later downplaying its significance.
The couple were simply arguing, a source close to the president told BFM TV.
