The Economist: Russian drones attacking Ukraine are controlled by Telegram bots

The note describes a new control algorithm for Shaheds and other models. The note claimed that the drones were controlled by bots on Telegram, which transmit flight data and video to operators in real time.

Russian drones attacking Ukraine are controlled by Telegram bots. This is supported by the Economist magazine in its publication yesterday, analyzing the method used.

According to the report, Russia is overwhelming Ukraine’s air defenses with hundreds of drones. On May 25, the Kremlin carried out what it called a “massive strike” against Ukrainian cities, using 298 drones. That’s probably a record number. Russia also used more missiles: 69 were launched that same night.

Ukrainian experts told the Economist that they recently discovered a note inside one of the dismantled drones, likely left by a Russian engineer described as friendly to Ukraine. The note describes a new control algorithm for Shaheds and other models. The note claimed that the drones were controlled by bots on Telegram, which transmit flight data and video to operators in real time.

According to a report by The Economist, the new control algorithm was discovered in the aforementioned note, which was hidden inside one of the Russian drones.

Russia has increased its drone production to launch even larger attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. The night of May 26 marked the largest drone attack since the start of the full-scale war, reportedly involving 355 Shahed drones and other models.

Challenges for Ukraine's air defense

New control methods, based on artificial intelligence and various internet networks, pose a challenge for Ukrainian defense, according to the Economist.

Speaking to the Economist magazine, Ukrainian aviation expert Kostiantyn Kryvolap expressed doubts about Russia's plans to launch 1,000 drones a day, but admitted that Moscow's production capabilities will "significantly increase."

Russia has deployed Iranian-made Shahed missiles and their domestic counterparts, the Gerans, to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses with massive strikes.

However, on the Ukrainian side, the head of the Center for Combating Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council, Andriy Kovalenko, essentially denied The Economist's publication regarding the "Shahed" memorandum.

"The story about the notes on the "Shaheds" and control via Telegram bots is, of course, something special. As for remote control - several "Shaheds" have been controlled in this way since last year, cameras have been installed on them and they are controlled remotely.

What other sources say

Ukraine's air defenses are increasingly weakened as supplies from Western countries run out. An anonymous source told Le Monde newspaper that Ukraine has run out of ammunition for its two SAMP/T air defense batteries, while its Crotale short-range air defense systems have not received new missiles for a year and a half.

It remains unclear how many US-made Patriot systems, which are vital for intercepting Russian ballistic missiles, remain in Ukraine's stockpile, as the Trump administration has yet to approve new military aid packages.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier this month that the US is working with NATO partners to identify additional Patriot air defense systems for Ukraine.
