Microsoft founder Bill Gates will testify on June 10 before the House Oversight Committee as part of the ongoing investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, the financier convicted of sexual abuse.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the committee had requested Gates' testimony through a letter sent on March 3. The interview will take place behind closed doors and is considered less formal than official testimony.
A spokesman for Gates said he "welcomes" the opportunity to cooperate with the committee. According to him, Gates was neither a witness nor a participant in Epstein's illegal activities and is willing to answer questions to support the investigation.
Gates' relationship with Epstein has been the subject of public scrutiny. Documents released in December linked him to Epstein, and Gates himself has acknowledged having had several meetings with him. In a 2021 interview with PBS NewsHour, he called the contacts "a mistake" and said he ended them after realizing Epstein wasn't contributing to global health initiatives as he had initially thought.
Gates' testimony is part of a series of interviews the committee is conducting with people connected to the case. Gateway founder Ted Waitt is scheduled to be interviewed on April 30, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on May 6. Prison guard Tova Noel, who has said she was the last person to see Epstein alive, is scheduled to be interviewed on May 18, and his former assistant Lesley Groff on June 9.
The committee has previously interviewed other high-profile figures, including former Attorney General Bill Barr, former Labor Secretary Alex Acosta and Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently in prison. Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have also been questioned about their ties to Epstein.
