At least ten Federal Bureau of Investigation employees have been dismissed from their posts due to their involvement in the investigation that former Special Counsel Jack Smith conducted into Donald Trump.
The news was reported by CBS News.
The development comes after Reuters reported that the FBI had requested records of phone calls made by its current director, Kash Patel, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, while they were not in office. According to Reuters, Patel said the agency had obtained his records without transparency and sufficient oversight. The news agency said it had not been able to independently confirm the claims.
These actions are related to the investigation that Smith conducted into classified documents that Trump took with him after the end of his term in 2021. Smith also opened another federal investigation into alleged efforts to challenge the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. These proceedings led to the filing of the first federal criminal charges against a former US president.
In mid-2024, a federal judge in Florida dismissed the case over the classified documents, arguing that Smith's appointment was not legal. After Trump won the 2024 presidential election, Smith also withdrew the election-related case.
Jack Smith previously held senior positions in the US Department of Justice. In 2018, he took over the head of the Specialist Prosecutor's Office in The Hague, where he continued the investigations that led to indictments of former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi and other former KLA leaders.
