The Greek historian: The trade of patriotism and the "hero" Fredi
Nikos Xydakis

Nikos Xydakis said what everyone knows about Freddie Beleri and his role but doesn't say. He is selling patriotism for free. Unfortunately, this partly explains either the "national alignment" or the left's awkward silence. Nationalism is nowhere to be found. Nor cynicism: some whisper "and if this is true about Beller, we don't care to talk about it."

To our super-patriots who have targeted Xydakis to remind us that it is his opponents, also Greek-born Albanian citizens, who are harmed by Beler's alleged illegal actions. He hurt the minorities.

Let them also think about what they would say if the mayors of Istanbul and Ankara came to Thrace for an event in favor of a minority of prisoners, accused of a series of illegal acts.

Some super-patriots place next to Beler the other "hero" Kostandino Katsifa with Kalashnikovs. And simply the correlation speaks volumes.

Soft was Xydakis' reference to the dark past of the professional patriot, accused of embezzling minority votes. And very little said.

But let's remember the past. Beleris was involved in the MAVI case in the early 90s. He was one of seven men arrested at gunpoint on the night of 18-19 March 1995 by Greek border guards near Delvinaki Ioannina, a few hundred meters from the Greek-Albanian border. In the trunk of their two cars they carried nine Kalashnikov automatic combat weapons, 2 pistols, and hoods.

Beleris had appeared in a performance by neo-Nazi Michaloliakos while LAOS Youth had organized a special event with speakers Beleri, Thanos Plefri and Karatzaferis.

As the video of the event shows, the slogan that Karatzaferi's fans chanted was nothing but Nazi "we will return and the earth will shake".

This is not an "anti-national" rumor or conspiracy. The journalist of Η ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΗ - Επίσημη παγή Stavros Jimas, in his book "On the Starization of Nationalism", with the prologue Papahela writes: "then there was no doubt that the detainees planned to attack a military target, which was the Logou camp, in the distance short from the border. It was also revealed that it was the same MAVI group, or at least some of its members, that had attacked Episcopal e Eperm and killed 2 Albanian soldiers in 1994."

*Kostis Papaioannou is a historian and writer. He works in education. He was the chairman of the National Commission for Human Rights and the General Secretary of Human Rights. Previously, he was president of the Greek section of Amnesty International.
