Historiania: Europe should not deceive itself, Putin uses the attack to blame us
Putin

The well-known historian and journalist Anne Applebaum has spoken about the terrorist attack in Moscow.

She said Putin is not interested in consolation as he says he will use the attack to increase repression in Russia and increase aggression against Ukraine. According to her, Putin immediately used this bloodshed to blame the West and attack Ukraine, as he emphasizes that there will be no peace negotiations.

"Europe should not deceive itself! Putin doesn't care about our condolences," says Anne Applebaum.

How do you read the attack in Moscow?

"I cannot say for sure who is responsible. But it is clear that, regardless of who fired the shots, the Putin regime will use the attack to increase repression in Russia and intensify aggression against Ukraine," she said.

On March 7, the US embassy in Moscow warned of a possible attack by Islamic radicals. Do you believe in the leadership of ISIS-K, the Afghan column of the Caliphate?

"I have no idea. I believe that US intelligence has picked up signals in what they call 'chatter', chatter on the Internet and in their information channels. The same thing, by the way, the Americans did before the Russian attack on Ukraine two years ago: they had the information and decided to make it public in the hope of preventing the invasion. But no one believed it then, just as Kremlin leaders do not believe it today. But, in the second case, the Russians, instead of investigating their mistakes, try to manipulate the facts and use them to legitimize their political and military choices", said the journalist.

Strange, however, that the terrorists moved so easily...

"Yes: in a region super-controlled by the police and security services like Moscow, it's really curious that this group of armed people could act in that way. Perhaps they were helped by the fact that Russian commands concentrated the best of their forces around the Ukrainian border. Indeed, they are looking in the wrong direction: they are targeting Kiev, which is only defending itself, and are not sufficiently controlling Islamic extremists and ISIS terrorists. Moscow has chosen to fight another war and is paying the consequences," the historian continued.

What do we know about Muslims in Russia?

"Many of them have not forgotten the Russian crimes in Chechnya a quarter of a century ago, nor the repression in Syria alongside the regime of Bashar Assad. "Russia helps dictatorships in Central Asia: its soldiers have Muslim blood on their hands," Applebaum said.

Do you think that this wave of international condemnation against the attack in Moscow can now somehow facilitate the resumption of dialogue between the Western front and Putin?

"Absolutely not. Putin immediately used this bloodshed to blame us in the West and to attack Ukraine. I would like to repeat to the European reader and especially to the Italian that Putin is not interested in any form of dialogue with us. Putin does not seek our friendship, she does not want the negotiations to reach a compromise and she does not want concessions from us. Her main objective remains the destruction of independent Ukraine and its submission to Moscow," she said.

Never peace?

"Of course, in the end there will be a negotiation. But that will only happen if Putin realizes he can't win and then withdraws his troops. Peace will come only when Russia abandons the occupied territories and brings its soldiers home. Forget the naive idea that there is a good, friendly side to Putin and therefore it is up to us to cultivate it. It doesn't work that way. I think it's clear that Russia is much weaker than it tries to show. Putin had to kill Navalny and eliminate all political opponents before the vote: a sign that he was anxious about the outcome. It is a large part of the country that does not want it and is afraid of it even today", she concluded./  Corriere della Sera
