US President Donald Trump has backed away from threats to use force over Greenland after weeks of political chaos as his top aides tried and ultimately succeeded in both meeting the president's demands and allaying the panic they caused among US allies, according to sources familiar with the talks.
In his comments on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump ruled out using military force after weeks of refusing to do so, and in a social media post said he would no longer impose tariffs that he had threatened to put into effect on February 1.
This came, according to Reuters, after White House officials had promoted a less provocative approach, with some key members of the president's team not enthusiastic about the potential use of military force to invade Danish territory, White House sources said.
After saying tariffs were out of the question, Trump said he and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte “set the framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region” during talks in Davos. He tasked senior officials with negotiating a possible deal.
