NATO chief 'softens' Trump, US president drops tariffs and reaches
Mark Rutte and Donald Trump

The situation appears to have improved after the meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, with whom Trump appears to have reached a framework agreement on Greenland...

The US president's visit to Switzerland couldn't have gone any better for European countries. After Trump's declaration during the World Economic Forum in Davos that the US would not use military force to invade Greenland, more good news has come for EU countries, as Trump has withdrawn from planned tariffs on 8 European countries that opposed him over Greenland.

The situation appears to have improved after the meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, with whom Trump appears to have reached a framework agreement on Greenland.

“This solution, if reached, will be a great solution for the United States of America and all NATO countries. Based on this understanding, I will not impose the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1. Further discussions are underway regarding the Golden Dome with respect to Greenland. Further information will be made available as the discussions progress. Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations. They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter ,” Trump said in a post on “TruthSocial.”

President Trump's declaration of a "framework for a future agreement" for Greenland may offer some relief to the US's European allies. However, the news raises more questions than it answers, leaving allies to speculate about exactly what role the US might play in the island territory in the future.

One thing is certain, Trump did not mention American ownership of the island, which is controlled by Denmark, reflecting a 180-degree shift from 24 hours earlier.

It remains to be seen what kind of deal Trump and Rutte have made, whether it would require congressional approval, and how the president might declare victory if it falls short of his calls for a formal takeover of power by the US.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, EU leaders will meet in Brussels for what has been called an emergency summit. Over the past 72 hours, top European politicians have consciously chosen to use their harshest language yet in response to US policy, in some cases categorizing the Americans in the same category as the Russians when they spoke of violating international law and ignoring the sovereignty of nations.

Trump's withdrawal of the tariff threat will take a huge amount of tension and drama out of the meeting. But they will want to know what exactly Trump and the NATO chief have concocted with this magic solution to a problem that was threatening to strain, if not destroy, the transatlantic alliance.

Denmark has long said it would be happy to see an increased US military presence in Greenland. Perhaps the deal with Trump is that NATO has pledged to increase its presence on the island, to reassure Donald Trump that the alliance is finally paying due attention to Greenland.

On the other hand, this decision seems to have given the markets a breather. After Trump's tweet about reaching a framework for a deal on Greenland and the announcement that he will not impose additional tariffs on European allies, all major US indices have increased./ Pamphlet
