After the deep defeat in front of Kyriakos Mitstotakis in the early elections held last Sunday, the head of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, through an extraordinary statement, resigned from the leadership of the party.
Tsipras announced that he will not run again to be president and that he will propose a new leadership at the top of the party.
"I have decided to propose the election of a new leadership by party members with direct recourse to procedures in which I will not be a candidate. It is necessary to find a new SYRIZA that will respond to the challenges and expectations of those it has decided to represent", said Alexis Tsipras, at the same time declaring that he is proud of what the party has managed to achieve.
He said that Syriza became the first party in Europe to govern under very difficult conditions.
Meanwhile, in the elections held on June 25, Mytsotakis was confirmed as Prime Minister by receiving over 40% of the votes against Mitsotakis who did not manage to receive even 20% of the votes.
