The embarrassing defeat in the local elections, Erdogan reacts: March 31 is not

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reacted for the first time after the deep defeat in the local elections.

The Turkish opposition scored an unimaginable victory in yesterday's elections.

In Istanbul and Ankara, Ekrem Imamoglu and Mansur Yavas defeated candidates supported by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who lost in the two largest Turkish cities five years ago.

"Today our voters have made a very important decision, they have decided on a new policy in Turkey. We have achieved a historic result," said Ozgur Ozel, secretary of the main opposition CHP party.

President Erdoğan admitted defeat after the publication of the results shortly after midnight, as he told the state media that the AKP could not get the results it wanted in these elections. He also said that "March 31 is not the end for us."

Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, once again strongly confirmed his position. With over 85% of the votes counted, he received more than 50% of the votes, being reconfirmed as mayor and thus defeating Murat Kurum, the candidate supported by President Erdogan, who remained at 40%.

"The people of Istanbul gave us the authority. You have opened the door to the future ," Imamoglu said while announcing the victory, during a speech at the CHP headquarters in Istanbul.

He thanked the voters and criticized the "authoritarian system" of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In many neighborhoods of Istanbul, voters of the main opposition CHP party celebrated en masse the reconfirmation of Imamoglu as mayor, after he had already won five years ago, wresting the city on the Bosphorus from President Erdogan's political movement, which had dominated it for more than twenty years.
