New sweeping tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump have come into effect, marking a further escalation of the US trade war with countries around the world.
The president made them public on social media, declaring, "It's midnight!!! Billions of dollars in tariffs are now flowing into the United States of America!"
Trump has significantly increased taxes on imports from a number of countries, including a 100% tariff on semiconductors manufactured abroad and a 50% tariff on exports from India and Brazil.
These measures are part of a broader effort to force countries to renegotiate trade relations with the US and shift production to American territory.
India, currently one of the world's largest energy importers, was hit with a 50% tariff that takes effect on August 27 if it does not stop buying oil from Russia. New Delhi called the measure "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable."
Meanwhile, Brazil faced the same tariff rate after Trump criticized President Lula da Silva for his stances against American technology firms and for supporting the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Southeast Asian manufacturing economies such as Laos and Myanmar have been hit hard, with tariffs of up to 40%. Experts point out that these countries are closely linked to China's trade chains, which has made them clear targets of Trump's policies.
However, some major countries such as Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom have reached agreements for lower tariffs. The European Union accepted a tariff of 15% under a new framework agreement with the United States.
Trump also announced a 100% tariff on computer chips made outside the US, but companies that have invested in US manufacturing such as TSMC (Taiwan), Samsung and SK Hynix (South Korea) are expected to be exempt. Apple, under pressure from the administration, announced a new $100 billion investment in the US.
On Canada, the tariff was increased from 25% to 35% due to inconsistencies in cooperation against drug trafficking. However, most Canadian exports are protected by the USMCA treaty. Meanwhile, tariffs on Mexico have been suspended for another 90 days pending the conclusion of a new trade agreement.
Meanwhile, the US and China are in intensive talks to extend a 90-day tariff pause period that ends on August 12.
Trump first revealed the range of country-specific tariffs on April 2, a date he called "liberation day," claiming that the rest of the world had been plundering the US for decades.
After a 90-day pause brought in a week later and another four-week truce announced on July 7, he confirmed the new set of tariffs last Friday.
Yesterday, Trump also warned that the US would impose a tariff of around 100% on semiconductor chips imported from countries that do not manufacture in America or do not plan to do so.
Meanwhile, all countries not on the list have a 10% tariff, including Albania.
