
An air disaster has occurred in Ghana, with 8 people killed, including two ministers, after a military helicopter crashed.
The aircraft crashed in the Ashanti region of southern Ghana, according to the BBC. The crash killed all eight people on board.
The Z-9 military helicopter crashed under unclear circumstances shortly after takeoff from the capital Accra, en route to the town of Obuasi.
The country's defense and environment ministers have also died in the crash. Julius Debra, Chief of Staff to President John Mahama, announced at a press conference that Defense Minister Edward Omane Boama and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed died in the accident.
Also among the other officials were Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister of Agriculture, Samuel Sarpong, National Democratic Congress (NDC) vice chairman, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboajye and three crew members.
"It is a national tragedy," said Julius Debra, announcing that flags across the country would be flown at half-mast as it is a day of mourning in Ghana.
