6.1 magnitude earthquake in Crete, several aftershocks recorded; residents in

Two aftershocks measuring 3.1 and 2.7 on the Richter scale were recorded in Crete following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake.

The intensity and duration of the earthquake were high in Chania and Rethymno, while many residents came out of their homes in the two prefectures of Western Crete. According to local authorities, there was no material damage.

The head of the OASP (Organization for Earthquake Planning and Protection), Efthimios Lekkas, stressed that it is positive that there was a large focal depth.

He also added that there does not appear to be a tsunami risk, while emphasizing that this is a different geotectonic framework than that of the earthquakes in Santorini and Arkalohoris.

"The region has again produced major earthquakes. It is not related to the arc located south of Crete. It was an earthquake that occurred at the intersection of two tectonic plates, the European and the African. The tectonic environment in this area produces such earthquakes, so we need to pay attention to the phenomenon. We need to see its development," he said.

The earthquake was also felt in Argos, Corinth and Athens, as well as in much of southern Greece.
